Godzilla Final Four 2013: Middle of the Pack
April 6, 2013Godzilla Final Four 2013: The Elite Eight
April 8, 2013The field is getting harder to order. Of course, that’s bound to happen when your options are shrinking and, in the case of this year’s Godzilla Final Four, has made me wonder if I have placed many of the movies in their correct spots for the 2012-2013 year. Funny enough, it’s created a little bit of anxiety. I want to be honest, but, at the same time, I’ve felt some movies may need to move higher or lower, but then when I think about the other films in the franchise, it becomes more convoluted.
I feel a bit more comfortable in the finality of The Mighty Twelve than I did with the previous two, but that isn’t saying much. I still think a couple of the movies here could go higher and a couple lower. Again, when taking this past year into consideration, it becomes more difficult when compared to the other movies I did, and did not, watch as well as what I took away from them, entertainment-wise, this past year. Enough babbling. Let’s get going…
12. Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II: I hadn’t seen Godzilla Vs. Mechagodzilla II in a few years. Which is strange, because I’ve always considered this one, not only one of my favorite films in the Heisei era, but also one of my favorites in the franchise.
So earlier this year I spent part of an evening watching this movie and was reminded of how much I enjoy this movie. The battles are fantastic as well as the effects and the tone is a bit more adult. Not to mention Ifukube’s score is one of his best outings.
Still, that doesn’t take away from a stiff Rodan marionette, some horrendous acting, and goofy dialogue.
Nevertheless, I felt very satisfied at the end of the movie. I found myself cheering for Godzilla against his mechanical counterpart and empathizing with Baby Godzilla.
