May 11, 2010Some news circulating in Korea and on Sci-Fi news sites that a new 3D monster film in South Korea is now beginning production. Live Action Korea, The Seoul Economy Newspaper, and SciFi Japan have reported that CJ Entertainment has confirmed on financing the upcoming 3D monster movie Sector 7 (aka Mining Area 7). The film is being directed and produced by Youn Je-kyun.
CJ Entertainment has financed Youn’s previous works, such as his successful 2009 disaster flick, Haeundae, which is the 4th highest-grossing film of all-time in South Korea and the highest-grossing film in 2009.
Award-wining actor Ha Ji-won, who starred in Youn’s Haeundae, will star in this film.
The film is about a mutated creature that runs among an oil prospecting ship. CJ Entertainment has been impressed with Youn’s work, especially with the creature effects, to where they’ve invested 10billion Korean Won ($8.67million US) into this 3D film. CJ Entertainment hopes that the film would follow the success of the 3D wake made by James Cameron’s international, mega-blockbuster hit, Avatar.
Sector 7 (Mining Area 7) Director Youn Je-kyun said that the film is a Korean equivalent to the ALIEN quadrilogy.
