This Week’s Poll: What Do You Want Godzilla 2012 To Be?

May 12, 201005/12/2010 UPDATE: Since posting this news and discussing it on Planet X Control Room Episode 4, it has now been confirmed that Shout! Factory will indeed release all of the Showa Gamera films onto DVD between now and next year. So if you’re trying to find the hard-to-find Gamera vs. Zigra uncut on DVD, well you’re in luck now my friend!
After doing the third episode of Planet X Control Room Podcast, I was going through to get images of giant monster film posters. I was going through the Gamera posters until I saw a sub-section in Wikipedia that intrigued my eyes. Here’s what that section read:
“It has been announced that a Los Angeles-based entertainment company, Shout! Factory, acquired the rights from Kadokawa Pictures for all eight of the Showa Gamera films and they will be issuing the uncut, Japanese versions on DVD for the first time, ever in North America. These “Special Edition” DVDs are being released in sequential order, starting with ‘Gamera: The Giant Monster’ on May 18, 2010. The first sequel, ‘Gamera vs. Barugon’ (1966) will follow on July 6, 2010. The subsequent films will follow shortly thereafter, with ‘Gamera, The Space Monster’ scheduled for late 2010/early 2011.”
I was VERY stoked when I saw this that these three Gamera films are coming for the “first time” in the US. However; I have seen the original, uncut Gamera: The Giant Monster film several years ago and also saw the American version of the film that was released by Alpha Video, as well as seeing Gamera vs. Barugon uncut. The only thing that I was really excited looking forward to is a very-hard-to-find-film, Gamera, The Space Monster. I have almost all Gamera films except for that one (also don’t have Gamera vs. Jiger nor Gamera vs. Zigra on DVD). But I plan on getting the first Gamera film since I don’t have the uncut version on DVD, only on VHS, and Gamera, The Super Monster when it comes out later this year or early next year. I already have Gamera vs. Barugon on DVD, so there’s no need for me to get it.
If you’re a Gamera fan, I suggest going to Shout! Factory or Amazon and pre-order your copy of these films today, if you haven’t already.
With the releases of these three films of Gamera, will they be releasing more of them? I surely hope so so I can finally get my hands on the Jiger and Zigra DVDs!
