Godzilla Final Four 2013: The Final Four
April 11, 2013Planet X Control Room: Episode 35
April 18, 2013With me mentioning that Issue #3 could rival Issue #1 as being the best in the mini-series, this could also rival the other two – more specifically, the action sequences when Godzilla faces off the second-generation Mechagodzilla form and then Spacegodzilla. We pretty much get the battle of the Godzillas which turns out to be quite the nerdgasm which we never see the films when it comes to seeing these three at the same time in a three-way match.
Anywho, Issue #4 takes place 8 years after Issue #3 in 1987 in the city of Bombay, India (now known as Mumbai). We pretty much see Godzilla weaking havoc in the city right away and also getting into the mind of Ota Murakami how his AMF division has pretty much been watered-down to nothing more than glorified weather watching. We then shortly witness the arrival of the second-generation Mechagodzilla appearing out from a giant container and starts firing its weapons at Godzilla.
As Ota steps outside to have a smoke and watching the battle unfold, he spots Deverich and starts to go after him – radioing Ken to send backup to capture Deverich. Ota follows Deverich to an abandoned warehouse, and captures him after Deverich talks to a couple men in black suits. Ken soon comes with backup to arrest Deverich.
It comes to the discovery that Deverich had perfected the Psionic Transmitter and becomes a thousand-times more potent than ever before. Soon after Ota and Ken capture Deverich, a huge object from the sky lands in the middle of Bombay, and thus revealing Spacegodzilla.
Spacegodzilla makes no hesitation and takes out Mechagodzilla first, and soon starts to beat up on Godzilla. Ota and Ken go to where Mechagodzilla was and to get it up and going to defeat Spacegodzilla. Ota realizes that Spacegodzilla uses the cluster of crystals as his source of power, and fires all of Mechagodzilla’s weapons at the crystal clusters and destroys them. Godzilla soon gets up and destroys Spacegodzilla by the use of his Atomic Ray, which then ends Issue #4 with a silhouette of King Ghidorah and Gigan flying past Jupiter.
Issue #4 of Godzilla: The Half-Century War gets right into the daikaiju action without any hesitation with not a whole lot of the human portion like we’ve seen in the previous 3 issues of this mini-comic series. However, it seems to balance out pretty damn well, although the human drama in this comic is excellent unlike any other daikaiju comic and film. One of the two big gripes I have on this issue is that they captured Dr. Deverich a bit too soon; I would’ve kept him going to the final issue of this mini-series. But, if that’s something the writer’s wanted, then I don’t mind as much. The other big gripe I have is that the three-way battle of the Godzillas was too short and that Spacegodzilla was defeated easily. Spacegodzilla should’ve blocked all of Mechagodzilla’s attacks against the crystal cluster like he blocked Godzilla’s Atomic Ray attack.
With those aside, the art and color palette is still amazing as always, human drama was limited this time around but was still effective and excellent, and the daikaiju battles were good but short.
So now we’ve got four issues reviewed on this mini-series, can’t wait for the final issue!
