“Godzilla” (1998) & G-Fans
August 14, 2013PXCR Total Axess: G-Fest XX Overview
August 20, 2013It’s been about a few months or so since I last finished up reviewing the last issue of Godzilla: Half Century War which has become my favorite Godzilla comic issue by far. But, will the first issue to a new Godzilla comic series, Godzilla: Rulers of Earth, surpass Issue #5 of Godzilla: The Half-Century War? The answer to that is not quite, but the first issue to this brand new Godzilla comic series is still good in its own right.
Of course, I should get this out of the way that Matt Frank’s artwork on this new series is superb, both cover and comic itself. The artwork in the comic is much more visual and viewable than the ongoing Godzilla comic, also published by IDW, where one of the main characters looks like Popeye in that.
Anywho, with the artwork/visuals off to the side, the issues story of trying to get the series going and to build its own world is kind of confusing at first, and then you start getting the picture that you’re following two characters, both of whom are in the megazoology and are attending a conference to megazoology in Honolulu, Hawaii named Lucy Casprell and Dr. Kenji Ando. There’s really not much excitement going on in the human drama part of the issue, however, the biggest battle(s) that we get to witness in the first issue right-off-the-bat are between Gigan and Kumonga, then we see Godzilla about to face-off against Zilla which would wait till Issue #2 rolls around.
The issue, more or less, pretty much introduces one of the two potential main characters and perhaps characters that we’ll possibly see in upcoming issues of the series. So really nothing big in this issue with the exception of the Gigan-Kumonga battle and seeing Godzilla about to fight against Zilla.
I do believe that the series will get better once it really kicks off with Issue #2, which hopefully I can get around to reading that next week and review it shortly afterwards. Will I think that the new series be better than Godzilla: The Half-Century War? We won’t know for sure, but I’ll say right now that the series probably won’t quite reach the greatness that GHCW has.
