“Godzilla Raids Again” Review
May 1, 2011“Godzilla” by Ian Thorne Review
May 2, 2011Well, we’ve already got ourselves another comic review, just hours after NikAinu reviewed Issue #1!
The comic store that I usually go just got a few copies of Issue #2 in today. Of course, there were 4 variant covers for this issue, but was only to find two of the four covers. Anywho, purchased the issue, and read it right away as soon as I got back home.
Before I get into this new issue of Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters, I’ll say that Rodan and Anguirus make their debut here. So… let’s begin with what’s going on.
(Alert: There are some spoilers if you haven’t read the latest issue yet)
We pretty much begin from where we left off from Issue #1 where Godzilla is destroying Tokyo. A fisherman is trying to find his children, which later believes that Godzilla has taken their lives, and takes his anger and rage against the King of the Monsters. Will get to him in a bit, but right now the story takes us to a museum in Moscow, Russia, where we see a class on a little field trip and going through the Tunguska Event exhibit. A teenage boy looks at a good-sized meteor that was recovered, until some mysterious earthquake wreaks havoc on Moscow. The glass box that had the meteor in it shatters and the teenage boy takes it and puts the space rock in his backpack and exits the museum along with his classmates; however, they witness birds mysteriously falling from the sky and die immediately.
We’re then taken to some cattle farm in Mexico where a bunch of cows fall over and die mysteriously. The herders are puzzled why the cattle are dying, but then are confronted by Anguirus burrowing out from underneath their feet.
Now, we’re taken back to Moscow for a bit where the teenage boy believes that the meteor is filled with diamonds and that he’ll be rich; however, the rock crumbles and reveals an egg, which right away hatches to reveal what is a baby Rodan. The boy hides Rodan in his closet while he goes to a hockey practice.
Then, the story takes us back to Mexico where three kids are playing soccer until they hear some thundering noise, which then we see Anguirus tucked in his ball form and lands on a school, destroying it, and perhaps killing the kids in the process.
After that, we’re taken to the Pentagon where the President is talking to his advisers trying to come up with ways to deal with this problem.
Furthermore, we’re taken to Moscow where the boy comes back home from his practice, only to find his room demolished and Rodan eating his lizards. Rodan busts through the roof of the house and spits out the hockey stick that the teenage boy was holding (should know what that means obviously) and flies away.
The story then goes to the White House Press Room where the President is telling the reporters that they’re doing everything they can, but the reporters are somewhat frustrated with his response and actions towards this crisis. The story then takes us to the Texas-Mexico border where a reporter is interviewing the Governor of Texas about the tall, steel wall he’s building to prevent the Anguirus from coming to the United States; but, Anguirus appears and destroys the wall’s ass and runs off to wreak havoc in America.
Lastly, Godzilla is destroying Yokohama, and walking towards a skyscraper where the fisherman has tons of explosives around his body atop the building. He jumps from the building and detonates the explosives in front of Godzilla’s nose; only to have Godzilla scratch his nose after the explosion and keeps on walking, thus concluding Issue #2 of Godzilla: Kingdom of Monsters.
The art and story seem to have improved from last time, however, the story seemed that it was jumping constantly, which is my only gripe about this issue. Other than that, the issue has gotten a little bit darker, much more serious and a lot more chaos and destruction. Issue #2 is still a good read, although the story jumps quite a bit in the middle part of the issue.
So be on the look out of Issue #3 around this time in May!
